The
German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national
institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of
food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany
on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment
criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and
interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own research on
topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an
institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal
Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
The following permanent position is now available in the unit “Plant Toxins and Mycotoxins” of the Department “Safety in the Food Chain” at the BfR:
Analytical or Food Chemist as Scientific Officer (f/m/d)
at the National Reference Laboratory for Mycotoxins and Plant Toxins

Tasks:
The following permanent position is now available in the unit “Plant Toxins and Mycotoxins” of the Department “Safety in the Food Chain” at the BfR:
Analytical or Food Chemist as Scientific Officer (f/m/d)
at the National Reference Laboratory for Mycotoxins and Plant Toxins

Tasks:
- Conceptualisation, planning and heading research projects on the advancement of analytical techniques for mycotoxins and their transformation products based on targeted and non-targeted methods (using high-resolution mass spectrometry) and on the occurrence and behaviour of mycotoxins in the food chain
- Development, optimisation and validation of analytical methods within the scope of activities of the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for mycotoxins and plant toxins as well as in research projects
- Acquisition of third-party funding for corresponding research projects
- Independent writing of reports, specialist opinions and peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals
- Presentation of results at symposia and international conferences
- Participation in national and international committees and further development of international cooperation
- Supervision of technical staff as well as providing support to students and international visiting scientists within the framework of research projects and theses
Desired skills and experience
Requirements:
- University degree (master’s, diploma (university) or a comparable university degree) in chemistry, food chemistry, or a similar discipline, with an emphasis on analytical chemistry, PhD degree required, habilitation desirable
- Extensive experience in trace analysis of residues and contaminants (preferably mycotoxins) in food and feed using chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods
- Experience in managing (interdisciplinary) projects with national and international cooperation partners
- The ability to carry out independent scientific work is a prerequisite
- Experience in evaluating complex data using chemometric methods would be beneficial
- Proven ability of acquiring external funding
- Experience in presenting and publishing scientific results
- Research stay abroad advantageous
- Experience in working in accredited laboratories and validation of analytical methods desirable advantageous
- Knowledge of consumer health protection issues and structures would be beneficial
- Very good knowledge of spoken and written English
- Very good computer skills and a conscientious way of working, dedication, flexibility, teamwork and resilience, as well as willingness to travel for work are required
